Assignment 5 - Health and Safety

General Health and Safety steps when using a computer
It is essential than when using a computer you remember all the ways for safe working, such as:
1.     Make sure cables are positioned properly – cables should be out of the way so that they cannot be tripped over or no liquid could be spilt on them, cables should be kept neatly behind the computer or tied so that they are out of reach. An appropriate number of sockets are needed so wires are not trailing along the ground.

2.    Make sure the seat is positioned properlychair should have a back rest and adjustable height, your arms and thighs should be in a horizontal position while working.

3.    Worktops - worktops should be between 660mm and 730mm in height so that the user is at a good distance away from the screen.

4.    Lighting – the computer screen should be positioned away from light refection, so it should no be opposite a window, it should be at a right angle.

5.    Eye strain – looking away from your screen and focusing on a far away object every so often will stop straining on the eyes.

6.    Fire precautions – their should be a Co2 fire extinguisher that can put out electrical fires.
Health and safety steps when connecting to peripherals

Printer – when connecting a printer to a computer you should follow the instructions that are in the user manual, make sure the printer driver matches the printer model. All sockets must be switched off when inserting the plugs and USB cables. The printer must be tested before being connected and used. You should make sure that no cables are running along the ground as this is a hazard and puts people in harm.

You should set up your camera using the instructions provided by the supplier. You should make sure that the computer is turned off at the mains and the plugs have been removed from the socket before connecting the camera. You should also use and anti-static band this discharges any static that have in your body before you connect the camera

Hard drive – when connecting a hard drive you should Handle it with care, never force it. You should remove VDU (visual display unit) from system and use the proper utensils; you should lift the hard drive carefully as it may be heavy so you should bend your knees and not your back. An anti static mat should be placed underneath the hard drive to stop short circuiting happening. when connecting the hard drive you should read the instructions and make sure cable are put corectly into the hard drive and monitor.

Assignment 4

I have been asked to evaluate a network for security threats and provide solutions. This company has no security in place and I can advise numerous things that will help improve and keep the company safe.

The business has the following problems:
1.    Unrestricted internet access
2.    Being able to install and uninstall software
3.    Data tapes are kept in plastic boxes above the server
4.    The sites that are visited are not recorded
5.    Downloads are not recorded
6.    No firewalls
7.    Entrance doors are not protected
8.   No logon

Unrestricted internet access is a problem in businesses because workers may get distracted from there work and then spend all day on websites that may have nothing to do with there work and also sites that are inappropriate. There is different software that could be used such as bluecoat proxy SG, this will limit the sites that employees can access thus
improving work productivity and they will be more efficient.

Employees should not be able to install and uninstall different software because this is something that everyone uses just because one person doesn’t use a particular application this does not mean that someone else in the company does not use it. Software may be installed that has no relevance such as Skype.

Data tapes should not be kept in plastic boxes because they could be destroyed easily, they should be kept in a waterproof and fire proof box also they should not be kept in a safe place where no one can take them preferably a room which has limited access. The data tapes are also only back up once a month, this should be done every month becuase is a tape is lost, alot of data will be lost.

A firewall is software such as barracuda spam and virus wall or avenquest, it stops email viruses and phishing scams. It is to make sure that your computer is secure from things that may brake it.

Anyone can walk into the business even those who do not work there. It is recommended that there is restricted access so only certain people can get in, or other people have to be allowed in. if there is no security anyone could go in and steel equipment, this would result in the company having to purchase new things so a keypad would be recommended as it may save them money because the company would have to keep buying new things, also the sever could be dmages and also data would be lost.

Website that the employees visit should be monitored so that the company no what they have been on they can also check by the persons log in who it is that may be viewing inappropriate or non relevant material.

Logons should be used so that no one can log onto you account or use the computer network that aren’t involved in that collage or business, it is to keep your information secure. It means that you have your own area of work were files can be saved and no one can access them and change or delete them. You may be a certain level in the company which means that not all things should be visible to you such as finance if you are nothing to do with that.

Records of what people have been downloading should be kept to see if anything that was downloaded contained virus’s that would harm the computer, therefore this could be dealt with immediately and minimize the harm of the computer.

Assignment 3 task 2

My friend has started using her computer for gaming and there is slow response times and poor video she has asked that I help her improve the quality of her gaming experience so I will suggest a few things that may help her with her problems

Firstly I would suggest a graphics card. A graphics card is installed into a computer and is responsible for rendering the image that appears on the screen. Graphics cards can cost from £20 to £2400. I would suggest a graphics card because it is great for gaming and video also it will improve the overall gaming experience. A graphics card can make your images more HD (High Definition) and is popular for mainstream gaming.

I have chosen a graphics card which costs £269 and would improve my friends quality of gaming as it is 2GB of memory which helps give good resolution thus realistic graphics.

Secondly I would suggest a new monitor. A monitor displays graphics and is like a TV but displays the graphics better. A monitor with good resolution is also needed because it will sharpen and brighten the image which appears on screen. A monitor with HD (high definition) will improve the graphics because they will be more defined also a she should get a monitor which is a suitable size such as 22”-24” is perfect for gaming.

I have chosen a monitor which costs £99.99 and will improve my friends quality of gaming because the monitors an appropriate size and also has response time 5ms

Thirdly I would suggest a new ISP. An ISP (internet service provider) is a company that provides your access to the internet. This will improve the performance of the game. I would recommend a service provider that offers around 30 MB speed so that you’re gaming is faster and better.

I have chosen the ISP with 30MB which costs £5 per month. It would be suitable for my friend

Finally I would suggest a RAM. A RAM is random access memory, it is computer storage. I would suggest this because a memory upgrade can make your computer run far better. It over speeds your media for faster write times and would be useful for storing you’re saved games so that you can play much more.

I have chosen a 4GB RAM which cost £54.99
